The Dollar’s Value and Your Paycheck
What do you mean the dollar’s weak? We just saw it in a cage match against a handful of pennies the other day and it knocked them out cold. 😵 OK, maybe we should stop taking the Walmart melatonin before bed.
Ever wonder how a weaker dollar affects your paycheck? 💵 From your morning cup of coffee to the margaritas in your Cabo getaway, we’re breaking it all down and dirty…in a classy martini way, not Christina Aguilera. 🍸🤸
Here’s Five Fast Facts on the impact of the dollar’s value:
📦 Drop Shipping - The value of the U.S. dollar has dropped a lot this year. It had its biggest six-month decline in over 50 years and is still down about 10% overall. A weaker dollar can make things imported from other countries cost more, but it can also help U.S. companies sell products overseas.
👎 Taking the L - Not every business gets hit the same way when the dollar drops. Huge international companies can sometimes balance things out with overseas sales or financial tools. Smaller businesses usually don’t have those advantages, so rising import costs can hit them harder.
🌴 All-Inclusive - The impact becomes pretty obvious once Americans leave the country. A weaker dollar means travelers get less value when exchanging money abroad, including popular vacay spots like Mexico. It also makes purchases from international retailers more expensive.
☕ Coffee Talk - A weaker dollar can slowly make imported products more expensive, too. The effect is usually small, but it adds up when prices are already climbing for other reasons. Coffee is a good example, since the U.S. imports a lot of it and prices have jumped over the past year.
🔄 Spin Cycle - The dollar goes up and down all the time. Some experts think it was overdue to fall after years of being strong, so the recent drop may not be super unusual. But for consumers, a weaker dollar can still help push prices for things like gas and everyday goods higher.
